Student Eagerly Awaits Results from Today's Bulgarian Presidential Elections

WASHINGTON - Junior Theodore Rodchenko is eagerly anticipating the most exciting political event of his lifetime; the November presidential elections.

“November 13 is going to be the biggest day in Bulgarian history and possibly in the history of the world.”

While other students might be looking a little closer to home for election excitement, Rodchenko has become enamored with the political process of the small South-eastern European nation. “No other country in the whole world has Bulgarian politics beat. Bulgaria just has so much going on. It’s got the socialists, and the nationalists, and the centrists, and the--uh, the--that’s it, actually. But those three factions are still super interesting!”

Rodchenko explains how the election will have a major impact on the region of South-eastern Europe and maybe beyond but probably not. “This election could gravely affect the Bulgarians’ position in the world. The key issue is whether or not to support an oil pipeline between Russia and Bulgaria. If that happens, Bulgaria will be marginally more attached to Russia than it already is. DAT IS VERY IMPORTANT,” he exclaimed suddenly in an Eastern European accent (Mr. Rodchenko is from Long Island).

Mr. Rodchenko went on to examine how “hip” Bulgarian politics can be, and tried to explain the various internet memes that have arisen from the election, but we kicked him out of our office before much discussion took place. Let’s just say the Bulgars should not be known for their internet wit.

We can only hope that Mr. Rodchenko will recover from this political season in the next few days (which we cannot say for ourselves).
